Kickass and Arlo Guthrie

 

Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that the keeper didn’t try to figure out why listening to Arlo Guthrie’s 1967 recording of Alice’s Restaurant on Thanksgiving morning made him—the keeper feel so deeply the emptiness left by the death of his daughter Pat some months ago.  Pat was on top of family holidays like the rich aroma of things cooking, and between dishes she lamented various current absurdities of injustice and narcissism.  She would have loved listening to Arlo’s account of being found unqualified to do government sanctioned killing because of a prior ticket for littering.  So just for today “Alice’s Restaurant” will be |”Pat’s Restaurant.”  There’s a lot of this kind of missing-somebody in lots of homes today. “You (can’t) get everything you want at Alice’s Restaurant!
