Kickass at the cemetery

Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that the keeper’s daughter Pat would have appreciated the fact that a dog was present when the clan gathered at the small Rosehill Cemetery near Menominee on a bright Saturday to deposit Pat’s ashes in the proximity of the resting place of the three wonderfully strong women who preceded her.

The dog was Ruger who wisely chose the shade of a near-by tree to lie quietly and observe as Pat’s sons Bud and Beau used a pothole digger to make an earthy depository for the lifeless trinkets from the most important life in their own lives.

Ruger is a shaggy, happy dog living with Beau and Becky and their sons Taylor and Trevor, and, of course, was a friend of Pat’s.  All animals and most people were Pat’s friends.

In this absurd time that is marked by untimely dying, Pat’s shocking death some time ago was particularly felt anew by those who clustered in the warm August sunshine and remembered her forthright ways and exuberant honesty.  Pat was the keeper’s sole daughter and he misses her on a daily basis, as do all family members.

Pat’s name will be added to the stone marker along with that of her beloved great grandmother Laura, her grandmother Evelyn, and her “best friend” her mother Betty:  The four of them will not be here in this country graveyard in any meaningful sense, but instead living on in the memories of those who loved them.  That includes Ruger who may have only known Pat, but who knows the importance of taking the shade at certain points in life…..and death.
