Kickass cricket/firefly
Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports on an incredible evening on the deck with the first cricket chirping in a syncopated pattern that made it impossible to determine the temperature—number of cricket chirps in 14 seconds, plus 40.
There were a few fireflies still doing their thing, and then a bat flew by and Kickass had an epiphany. Well, maybe just a random thought:
If the insect-eating bat were to swallow both a cricket and a firefly, would it end up with an illuminated thermometer?
As the green of summer gave in to the black velvet of night across the valley, Kickass heard the keeper say, “Damn, it is good to be alive!”
