Kickass Fiction and Reality
Kickass, the doorstop dog, says the keeper continues to slave away at the novel he has been working on for 40 or 50 years, and notes that over that time its plot seems to move closer to reality, which may be one of its problems, If he were writing a novel set in the current political scene, could he possibly include in the plot a trainload of Repubs running into a garbage truck, killing a worker and strewing garbage over a wide area?
Symbolism is obviously a big “fiction” deal, but the Repuib-train-garbage scene would be too much. As would a wizard of Oz lead character who tweets through his magic machine to try to make himself come off as Superman but fails and is seen as a combination of Donald Duck and Wily E. Coyote.
A writer’s life is never easy, particularly when his/her imagination cannot possibly keep pace with reality.
