Kickass nuthatch grub
Kickass, the doorstop dog, in helping his keeper—and invited participants, to step away from fretting about EVERYTHING except the nesting nuthatches outside the keeper’s bedroom window, reports that this morning a pair of brilliantly-colored red-bellied woodpeckers briefly inspected the nuthatches’ knothole nest before moving on. Shortly thereafter one nuthatch departed the knothole, and a minute later its mate showed up with a grub in its beak. Not finding anyone home, the second nuthatch flew off with the grub, indicating that it—the grub, was not intended to feed young, but rather an incubating mate. What ultimately happened to the grub is unknown, but it seems safe to assume that it was eaten by the nuthatch that brought it to the knothole in the first place.
